Spanish Lesson 6: 25 Commonly Used Expressions in Conversational Spanish

Welcome once again to Spanish Class!  We’ll continue our beginner level Spanish lessons today with a list of commonly used expressions.  You’ve probably heard some of these before and there’ll be others that are brand new to you.  With these 25 expressions you can have a very basic conversation in Spanish.  Be sure to listen to the Señor Jordan video at the end for help with pronunciation.

25 Commonly Used Expressions in Conversational Spanish

Los Saludos – Greetings

1  ¡Hola! Buenos dí­as – Hello! Good morning

Buenas tardes – Good afternoon

Buenas noches – Good night

Repita por favor – Repeat please

5 ¿Cómo está usted? – How are you? (formal)

6  ¿Cómo estás? – How are you? (informal)

7  ¿Qué tal? – How are things?/ What’s up?

8 (Muy) bien gracias (y tú) – (Very) well thanks (and you)

9 Chévere Great – (commonly used expression in Venezuela)

10 Más o menos/ Regular – Ok / so so

11 Mal – Bad

12 No muy bien – Not very well

13  Bienvenido(s) a la clase de español – Welcome to Spanish class

14 ¿ Cómo se llama usted? – What is your name? (formal)

15 ¿Cómo te llamas? – What is your name? (informal)

16 Me llamo – My name is

17 ¿Cómo se escribe? – How is it written/ spelt?

18 Mucho gusto – Pleased to meet you

19 Encantado/a – Delighted

20 ¿De dónde eres? – Where are you from (informal)

21 ¿De dónde es usted? – Where are you from (formal)

22 Soy de – I am from

  1. Another great lesson! I remember most of those expressions and I sometimes use them when talking to my sisters or friends.

    1. Yes! It’s nice to slip in a phrase or two. I do that with my boys. Just a couple random phrases that I use consistently with them. They pick up the meaning pretty quickly.
