Pablo Neruda’s Clenched Soul

Another Neruda poem written in his very romantic style and showcasing the passion and sentimentalism of his expression.

Clenched Soul” is a poem to express love, love and longing for a beloved who is not there.  The melancholy felt by the poet is echoed in the rhythm and imagery of his words.  She is not with him.  Only in his own mind does he share her company.

No one saw us this evening hand in hand

While the blue night dropped on the world.

His sorrow at missing his beloved is evoked through the repeated use of the word blue…

blue night

my blue sweater rolled like a hurt dog at my feet.

By the end he is questioning.  What are her feelings? Is there someone else in her life?  Is there hope for them to ever be together again?

…always you recede through the evenings

toward the twilight erasing statues.

Clenched Soul

And the Spanish version…

Hemos Perdido

Hope you enjoyed.
