Friday Canción: Gente de Zona – La Gozadera

It’s viernes de nuevo. Welcome to another Friday Canción.

Hispanic Heritage Month ended on October 15 but I still want to share this song with you today.  After all at Over The Andes we celebrate Hispanic and Latino culture all year through!

Today’s cancion de viernes is La Gozera by Gente de Zona

La Gozadera” is a Spanish term (identified as informal Venezuelan) which means good time or party.  The song was released by Cuban reggaeton duo Gente de Zona in 2015 and features Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony.  The music video was directed by Alejandro Pérez and filmed in Cuba while the scenes with Marc Anthony were filmed in the Dominican Republic.  The video features dancers from the Cuban contemporary dance company, Ballet Revolución.

The song itself highlights the vitality, spirit and diversity of the Latino people.  Characteristics and emblems (from food to musical genres) of several Latin American countries are identified and celebrated.  Set to a salsa beat, it’s one to get you moving.

Letras

Do you want to know what it means?

This next video plays La Gozadera while scrolling the English language translation.  I chose this one, created and uploaded by Danielle Chavez, as the images used showcase some beautiful scenery from across Latin America.

Using La Gozadera as a teaching or learning tool

Listen to the song.  List all the Latin American countries you hear called out. Next, use a blank map of Latin America and see how many of those countries you can accurately locate on the map.

To help you do this exercise, I’ve created a worksheet with maps.  Click here to download the lesson.

How many countries did you hear?

How many could you locate?

Hope you enjoyed the song and lesson.  Happy Friday!!!
