FRIDAY CANCIóN: Olvido by Amaral

Hola mis amigos.  ¡Es viernes!

Welcome to today’s Friday Canción.  Today’s song is another beautiful and haunting melody.  Olvido is sung by the Spanish group Amaral. The band consists of Eva Amaral and Juan Aguirre, who write their songs together. The band’s musical style is mostly identified as pop rock, but it is often fused with Latin beats, folk rock, complex poetic lyrics and traditional Spanish folk music.

Olvido is dedicated to Eva’s mother.  The band wanted the effect of looking into a mirror and seeing two sides of the same face. I don’t know if the song has that effect but it is certainly delightful to listen to; and does seem to have an ‘echo’ or sorts.

Using Olvido as a teaching or learning tool

The lyrics are so clear in this song and the grammar is quite simple as well.  Those characteristics make this a really good listening tool even for lower level students. I would suggest blanking out some lyrics and asking students to listen to the song and fill in the gaps.  I’ve prepared one already here for you.   Listen to the song at least twice to see how many words you can figure out.

A veces (10)______ y a veces olvido
los años que cumplo.
Y entonces olvido, y olvido y olvido
