Is Spanish the Most Popular Language Spoken in South America? | Fun Facts About Latin America (11)

Fun Facts about Latin America continues today with what might sound like a trick question. Is Spanish really the most popularly spoken language in South America? I know, I know, you want to shout at me, “Of course it is!”

Out of 422 million people in South America, 210 million speak Spanish and 206 million speak Portuguese! Portuguese speakers are almost as populous as Spanish speakers. 205 million of those Portuguese speakers come from just one country – Brazil. In terms of indigenous languages, Quechua (with 8 million speakers) is the most widely spoken. Guarani follows in second place with 5 million speakers. Thanks for sharing. It’s good to know I might survive down there while speaking and connecting with others. 🙂 I enjoyed my trip to Argentina, Mendoza in particular.
